Bringing the Bar to Life

Studs offset to provide airflow

I put the reclaimed wood on the walls before building the bar. I removed the cabinet doors, sanded and paint them Kilkenny Green (as well as the cabinets themselves). There were so many moving parts. The best way to describe the process is a symphony. Everything had to come together in the right way at the right time.

I probably overdid the framing. Built the top on 16-inch centers to support the weight of the tiles. A friend kidded me saying it's not a bar: it's a bomb shelter. One thing for sure, it's solid as a rock. If anyone decides to dance on the bar, we're good.

Calculating the various layers of plywood, underlayment, adhesive, and tile was critical to assure the bar would be the proper height. Nothing was left to chance. Even the tiles were laid out so that the various designs would be spread across the entire bar.

The stain is Golden Oak. There are two to three layers of polyurethane as well. Really happy with how it turned out.
